Currently, Pensacola only has
two areas which consist of 118 square miles.
These areas are called (LAARS), Large Area
Artificial Reef Sites in Escambia County, where
as Alabama has 5 areas over 1,200 square
miles. Pensacola needs to enlarge Escambia
counties LAARS areas for several reasons. Reason
#1. User conflict to close proximity,
constant fishing of the same wrecks which puts
extreme pressure on the fish. Reason #2. Enlarging this
area would allow reefs to be placed far enough
away where they could have different water
quality, temperature and currents. All of these
factors affect the fish and their willingness to
survive and reproduce. Below you will find a mapping of the legal
reef zones for Pensacola and Alabama. |
